As we celebrate school libraries the entire month of April, look for posts all month long about how different schools are celebrating. Today's post is from Shelley Carlton, library media coordinator at Tryo Middle.
Tyro Middle is celebrating School Library Month with several activities to encourage and promote the use of the library for a variety of purposes. Encourage and promote reading: The week of April 4-8 any student that checks out a book and does not have overdue books is eligible to draw for a prize. (The basket contains blank slips of paper and also a few slips marked “Prize”. Those that draw “prize” immediately go and select a prize. We are able to use the same basket for each class.) Prizes include books, posters, school supplies, gift certificates to the upcoming Book Fair and other miscellaneous items from the Dollar Tree. Kids LOVE this, even middle schoolers! Not only are kids checking out more books, they are making every effort to return to overdue items. I am also hosting booktalks with small groups throughout the month. This is a great way to promote reading and help students who have difficulty with book selection. The theme this month is “Betcha Can’t Read Just One” since all books are the first book in a series. Every title that was book talked is now checked out and has a waiting list, so I feel that this was a success and is something I will continue to do in the future. Encourage Inquiry and Exploration: We have checked out the Makey Makey Kits from the Lexington Public Library and will have those in the library for student use the week of April 18-22. I know many of you are already familiar with this, but it is a first for us and we are very excited. Students can also visit our “Wall of Wonder”. During brief mini-inquiry lessons, students discussed topics of interest and came up with questions that they would like answered. Some are related to curriculum and some are not (example: How are some service dogs able to detect seizures and diabetic comas in advance? Can they be trusted?) Students in the library may visit the wall and search for answers using digital resources.
